India reaches 50% Renewable Energy capacity mark ahead of 2030 timeline

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday said that India has reached the milestone of achieving 50 percent of the installed total energy capacity through renewable energy well ahead of the 2030 timeline.

Spelling out the government’s achievement to media persons during his visit to IIT Bombay, Joshi said, “We have achieved 50 per cent of the total installed energy capacity through renewable energy. We were supposed to achieve this by 2030 but have done so prematurely.”

The Minister said that India is becoming a global leader in the renewable energy sector. Valuing the contributions of IIT Bombay in the field of energy research and innovation, the Minister said the government was investing significant amount of money to overcome challenges in fields of productivity and grid balance.

Indian government is offering enormous amounts of money to conduct research. Increasing productivity as well as stability in the grid is a key challenge and we are working to tackle it,” he added.

Speaking about the reason for his visit, Joshi said, “I visited IIT Bombay as it has done very good work. I compliment the entire team and I am happy that the money has been spent judiciously for research and development.”

Speaking about the Prime Minister’s assurance, Joshi said the commitment of 50 per cent renewable capacity by 2030 has already been met ahead of time.

The Minister was speaking at the IVCA Renewable Energy Summit 2025, organized by the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association in Mumbai, where he gave the keynote address as Chief Guest.
