Mysuru, Karnataka – Preparations are underway for the grand finale of the world-renowned Mysuru Dasara – the majestic Jamboo Savari. With the countdown officially begun, all arrangements are nearing completion for this iconic cultural celebration.
This year marks the sixth consecutive time that the celebrated elephant Abhimanyu will carry the golden howdah housing the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the central highlight of the Vijayadashami procession.
Abhimanyu: The Veteran Leader of the Procession
At 59 years old, Abhimanyu is one of India’s most experienced kumki elephants, having participated in over 300 elephant capture operations and more than 80 tiger rescue missions. Known for his calm temperament and majestic stature, he stands 9 feet tall, weighs 4,920 kg, and has tusks measuring 2.75 meters each.
Abhimanyu has carried the 750 kg golden howdah five times before and is now fully prepared to lead the procession for the sixth time.
The Elephant Squad for Dasara 2025
A total of 14 elephants have been selected for this year’s Jamboo Savari. The Forest Department has released the list of the first batch of 9 elephants, which includes:
- Abhimanyu (59) – Mattigodu Camp
- Bheema (25) – Mattigodu
- Kanjan (24) – Dubare
- Dhananjaya (44) – Dubare
- Prashanth (53) – Dubare
- Mahendra (42) – Balle
- Ekalavya (40) – Dodda Harave
- Kaveri (45, female) – Dubare
- Lakshmi (53, female) – Balle
These elephants will arrive in Mysuru in early August. The second batch of 5 elephants will follow shortly after.
Gajapayana Ceremony on August 4
The traditional Gajapayana (elephant march) will begin on August 4 from Veeranahosahalli near Hunsur. The ceremony will be conducted with full traditional and official honors, in the presence of ministers, MLAs, and senior officials. After the send-off, the elephants will be transported to Mysuru in specially arranged trucks.
A Celebration of Culture and Devotion
The Jamboo Savari, held on Vijayadashami, is the grand finale of the 10-day Mysuru Dasara festival. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and showcases Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage. The sight of Abhimanyu leading the procession with the golden howdah is a moment of pride and reverence for people across the state.
