Mysuru: A political controversy has sparked in Karnataka after Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar strongly criticized Minister HC Mahadevappa for claiming that Tipu Sultan laid the foundation stone for the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam.
Yaduveer dismissed the statement as baseless and historically inaccurate, stating that there is no documented evidence to support the claim. He emphasized that the KRS Dam was built under the leadership of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, and the contributions of the Wadiyar dynasty are well recorded in history.
“Everyone knows who built the KRS dam. Making such claims without evidence is misleading. Instead of rewriting history, the government should focus on delivering good governance,” Yaduveer said during a press interaction.
Mahadevappa’s Statement Draws Criticism
Minister Mahadevappa had earlier stated that Tipu Sultan laid the first stone for the KRS Dam, suggesting that historical facts are often ignored due to political bias. His remarks have stirred debate among historians and political leaders.
Yaduveer responded by urging the minister to avoid distorting historical facts and instead concentrate on public welfare and administrative efficiency.
Historical Context of KRS Dam
The Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, located near Mysuru, is one of the most significant irrigation projects in Karnataka. It was initiated in the early 20th century under the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, with engineering led by Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The dam transformed agriculture and water management in the region.
