The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has not yet received police clearance to host the upcoming Maharaja Trophy 2025 matches at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The T20 tournament is scheduled to run from August 11 to 27, but the venue’s status remains uncertain following a tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations in June, which claimed 11 lives and injured many others.
Despite KSCA’s earlier announcement that the matches would be held behind closed doors, the Bengaluru police have withheld permission, citing safety concerns. A government-appointed inquiry committee led by Justice Kunha deemed the stadium structurally unfit for hosting large-scale events, recommending relocation of such gatherings to safer venues.
This development has sparked frustration among Maharaja Trophy franchises, many of which have already arranged logistics and accommodations in Bengaluru. A last-minute venue change could disrupt their plans and lead to financial losses.
As alternatives, KSCA is now considering the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Alur and the Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru. However, both venues present challenges—Alur lacks floodlights and spectator seating, which could affect broadcasting and scheduling of night matches.
The situation remains fluid, and further clarity is expected once investigations conclude. Meanwhile, the women’s Maharani Trophy has already been shifted to Alur, and there are concerns that even international fixtures like the Women’s ODI World Cup final may be relocated if safety issues persist.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Maharaja Trophy 2025.
