Bengaluru: A political storm has erupted in Karnataka over claims that Tipu Sultan laid the foundation stone for the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam. The statement, made by a senior minister, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders who accuse the Congress government of attempting to rewrite history and disrespect the legacy of the Mysore royal family.
Opposition leader R. Ashoka condemned the remarks, questioning how a ruler who died in 1799 could be linked to a dam whose construction began in 1911. He argued that the KRS Dam, known locally as Kannambadi Katte, is a symbol of the vision and sacrifice of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, who funded the project by selling royal jewels.
Ashoka further alleged that there is a deliberate attempt to rename the dam as “TS Reservoir” in honor of Tipu Sultan, calling it a move to erase the contributions of the Wadiyar dynasty. He warned that such efforts would not be tolerated by the people of Karnataka.
The controversy follows recent comments from Congress leaders that have been perceived as diminishing the legacy of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Critics argue that these statements reflect a broader political agenda aimed at reshaping historical narratives for short-term gains.
Supporters of the Mysore royal family have expressed outrage, emphasizing that Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar is remembered as a visionary leader who transformed Mysore through progressive reforms and inclusive governance. They insist that any attempt to undermine his legacy is an insult to the people of the region.
The BJP has vowed to resist any move to rename the KRS Dam and has called on the government to respect historical facts and public sentiment.
