Mysuru — In a significant ruling, the District Magistrate’s Court in Mysuru has disqualified four members of the Nanjangud City Municipal Council who had defected from the BJP to join the Congress party.
The disqualified members are:
- Girish Kumar T.M. (Ward 1)
- Gayathri (Ward 12)
- Meenakshi Nagaraju (Ward 22)
- Vijayalakshmi (Ward 27)
All four were originally elected on a BJP ticket and had assumed office under the party’s symbol. However, they were found to have violated the party whip by switching allegiance to the Congress.
The disqualification was issued under Section 3(1)(b) of the Karnataka Local Authorities (Prohibition of Defection) Act, 1987, which prohibits elected representatives from defecting to another party after being elected.
This decision underscores the legal consequences of party defection and reinforces the importance of political accountability at the local governance level.
